Reader's Article: Vard, the village that makes you fall in love with Transylvania

The Village of Vărd

The village of Vărd is located in Sibiu County, in the Chirpar Commune, just 4 km from the town of Agnita. The village has approximately 400 inhabitants and boasts an impressive history.

The Evangelical Church

At the center of the village stands the Evangelical Church dedicated to Saint Mary, built in Romanesque style in the 13th century.

The Defensive Tower

The defensive tower, which also houses the bell tower, was erected in 1438 and is attached to the west facade. The church underwent multiple modifications around 1853.

Inside the church and the fortified tower, one can find numerous inscriptions along with various dates, ranging from the door frames to the woodwork eaten away by termites on the bridge or on the supporting beams of the tower's upper sections. Once, the religious building had a fortified enclosure in a rectangular shape.

The Fortified Enclosure

The enclosure was reinforced by two defensive towers:

  • One on the eastern side
  • The other on the southwestern side

The fortification partially collapsed in 1877, and later, it was demolished by the locals in 1924 and again between 1953 and 1954. Today, the fortified enclosure no longer exists, with only faint traces of wall remnants still visible in the west of the church.
