Ațel: A Locality of Historical Significance

Ațel, a locality located 16 km from Mediaș, 70 km from Sibiu, and 33 km from Sighișoara, boasts one of the most beautiful fortified churches in Transylvania. The Ațel fortified church was built in 1471 by the craftsmen who constructed the evangelical church in Sibiu.

Architectural Features

The ensemble is an example of Gothic architecture featuring a well-fortified bell tower.

Historical Reconstruction

  • Master Andrei Pietrarul (*Andreas Lapicida), renowned for his work on the churches in the Târnava Valley, reconstructed the vault at the end of the 15th century*.
  • After some time, a defensive floor was added to the choir, accessible via a spiral staircase.

Early Fortifications

In 1460, before the actual fortification of the church, an oval wall was built around it. The gate tower, located in the southeast, was constructed from sandstone but has lost some of its original height due to changes in the landscape.
