Băgaciu is a village in Mureș County, Transylvania, Romania. It is the administrative center of the Bagaciu commune. The locality of Băgaciu is situated on the Bedeu River (also known as the Bagaciu River), a tributary of the Târnava Mică, located 12 km from the municipality of Târnăveni. The village of Băgaciu was first documented in the year 1351 under the name...
Inside the church in Băgaciu, there are several wonderful carved pews adorned with 16th-century inlays, perhaps the most beautiful of all that have been preserved in the Saxon village churches. The Evangelical Church in the village of Băgaciu, known in German as Bogeschdorf, was built with stone brought by cart from the Cibin Mountains.
It was first documented in 1389, but the current hall church in the style of mature Gothic, for which the stone was transported from such a distance, was constructed a few decades later, at the beginning of the 15th century, before the year 1421.
The church houses a valuable polyptych altar with sculptures (1518), pews crafted by Johannes Reychmuth (1533), and fragments of mural paintings (15th-16th centuries). The oval fortification surrounding the church had defensive walls 8 meters high, with wooden watch paths, now gone, and was supplemented in the north and east by an additional curtain wall.
