Zetea Dam Overview

The Zetea Dam is a dam built on the Târnava Mare River, upstream from the village of Zetea in Harghita County. The reservoir has a total volume of 44.0 million cubic meters, of which:

  • 7.6 million cubic meters is permanent volume
  • 36.4 million cubic meters is for retaining flood waves

The reservoir ensures a permanent flow of 1.2 cubic meters per second downstream for the water supply of the settlements along the Târnava Mare Valley. At the foot of the dam, a hydroelectric power station has been constructed.

Construction History

The construction works of the dam began in 1976 and were completed only in 1992. The purpose of building this dam was to:

  • Protect against floods
  • Control the river level

The dam protects the settlements located in the Târnava Mare Valley from flooding, and in times of drought, it ensures the normal water flow. The capacity of the basin is approximately 50 million m³.

Physical Characteristics

The length of the dam is 2.6 km, of which 1.4 km is located in the former valley of Târnava Mare. The width of the water at the dam is:

  • 400-800 m in the valley of the Şicasău stream
  • 150-200 m in the area of Târnava Mare

Fish Fauna

Initially, the fish fauna consisted of migratory fish from the streams. The most significant quantity is represented by the cleanliness, then as a proportion of the fish population follows the trout. Due to the high water flow, the spread of this species is unlimited, which is why there are specimens weighing over 10 kg.
