Bethlen Castle in Criș

Bethlen Castle in Criș

Ladislau Ciocan

Introduction

Located 10 km from Daneş, in the village of Criş, stands the Bethlen Castle, which has a tumultuous history tied to a family with great traditions. Built by the Bethlen family and designed in a German style, the castle was restored in the Renaissance style and transformed into a castle in the year 1400.

Architectural Features

It has a fortified enclosure and a square entrance tower, which is typical of late medieval military architecture. Bethlen Castle has two levels and an imposing circular tower, known as the Archers' Tower, which is considered the tallest archer tower in Transylvania.

Historical Significance

Bethlen Castle has suffered greatly over time, and today, even though it is not restored, it is perhaps one of the most beautiful castles in Romania, retaining its charm from days gone by.

  • The castle was nationalized around 1949, subsequently becoming the headquarters of the Agricultural Production Cooperative.
  • In 1976, restoration of the Bethlen Castle began, but the following year the Directorate of Historical Monuments was dissolved, leaving the castle in the same condition.
  • In the 1990s, restoration work resumed, and in 2007 the castle was returned to the Bethlen family, who continue to make efforts for the rehabilitation of the monument.
