Arrival at Bicaz Gorges

I have just arrived at the Bicaz Gorges, a paradise on Earth in our country. This region, extremely rich in picturesque landscapes, clean air, and remarkable beauty makes us realize that we have a dream country. Located in the counties of Neamț and Harghita, while also encompassing parts of the Hășmaș Mountains, these Gorges serve as the bridge between Transylvania and Moldova, two impressive regions of our country.

Distance and Accessibility

The distance that the Bicaz Gorges stretch is 6 kilometers (and even more). To be more specific, the area actually includes the distance between the Red Lake and Bicazul Ardelean, a locality in Neamț County. As for the actual journey along the entire road, it can be traversed by car, known as the trans-Carpathian road DN12. Additionally, it manages to connect the towns of Gheorgheni and Bicaz.

National Park and Natural Reservation

The Bicaz Gorges are integral components of the Bicaz Gorges – Hășmaș National Park, and are also included in the natural reservation of the Bicaz Gorges and the Red Lake, covering an area of 2,126.53 hectares.

The Trail and Scenic Features

However, let’s focus better on the actual trail. Thus, the entire region consists of marvelous serpentine roads, alongside limestone walls that form cliffs with incredible caves, such as:

  • Black Cave
  • Waterfall Cave

The totality of the watercourses within the Bicaz Gorges manages to create other, much smaller gorges, such as:

  • Lapoș Gorges
  • Sugaului Gorges
  • Bicajel Gorges

Natural Tourist Attractions

From a scenic perspective, the Bicaz Gorges are composed of a series of natural tourist attractions, such as the Altar Stone, which has an altitude of 1,120 meters. The Pintestilor Stone and the Arșița Stone barely exceed 800 meters each, but compared to us, their dimensions are truly immense.

Historical Background

Quickly taking a brief dive into history, the Bicaz Gorges were formed due to a long process of erosion of the Mesozoic limestones. The entire situation was favored by their relatively lower hardness, so alongside the Bicaz Gorges, various types of rocks with different shapes and colors were added, which can today be easily identified along the route between Bicazul Ardelean and the Red Lake. The tourist trail created is recognized worldwide as a stunning sight, with a real capacity to impress even the most discerning visitor.

Moreover, there are climbing routes here, on certain cliffs officially classified as suitable for such extreme sports.

Alpine Trails

Furthermore, in terms of names, the Bicaz Gorges boast the most alpine trails, which any climber would surely wish to traverse at least once in their lifetime.
