Biertan, one of the most important fortresses in Transylvania.
Introduction to Biertan
The locality of Biertan is first documented in 1283, in a document alongside Medias and Mosna, all three localities engaged in fierce competition for the administrative center of the "Two Seats" (of Medias and Schelk). Thus, each of the three localities sought to enhance its reputation through the construction of a more imposing and ornate sacred building.
Historical Significance
In 1397, Biertan is recorded as an "*oppidum" (fortified town) and in 1402*, the construction of the fortified church began. Over time, Biertan obtained the right to hold a weekly market on Saturdays, leading to significant economic development in the area.
Episcopal Seat
From 1572 to 1856, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate, and here one of the most important fortresses in Transylvania was built around the fortified church.
Current Developments
Today, the fortress is undergoing extensive rehabilitation, with a large part of the complex already restored with the help of non-repayable funds.
