Jibou Botanical Garden

Introduction

For a long time, the Botanical Research Institute located in Jibou has been one with excellent results. In order to provide the long-awaited support for researchers to embark on increasingly exciting experiments with high expectations, in 1968 it was decided to build a grand botanical garden, a fortification meant to ensure the necessary materials of various plants and exhibits.

Location and Establishment

The Botanical Garden is situated in the town of Jibou, in Sălaj County. Its establishment was initiated at the recommendation of the Biology professor, Vasile Fati. Gaining decision-making power through the establishment of the Biology Department within the Jibou High School, he realized his research expectations in this location. Before becoming a teacher at this institution, Vasile Fati led efforts to create practical teaching materials for the subject he taught – and even more than that, the professor laid the foundations of his first living laboratory, in limited conditions and on a small space, conducting small experiments.

Vision for a Larger Laboratory

Once he arrived in Jibou, Vasile Fati aimed to establish a larger and much more impressive laboratory. Thus, guided by the workforce and efficiency he had demonstrated all this time, the professor foresaw the advantage that the surrounding land presented if properly utilized.

Challenges and Expansion

However, after identifying the Botanical Garden as the next foundation to be built in that area, various problems arose, such as the limitation of its area to just 5 hectares. Nevertheless, as the years went by, the Garden received:

  • 7 hectares from the Ministry of Forestry
  • 6 hectares from the local City Hall
  • Several other plots that expanded its dimensions

Today, the area encompasses 24 hectares and is situated at an altitude of up to 272 meters. The various elevations shape a fairy-tale landscape, and the sceneries within the Botanical Garden are indescribable.

Unique Features

To outline, to some extent, the exceptional aspect of the Botanical Garden, we mention the impressive number of exotic exhibits and plants cultivated since 1781.

  • Woody species
  • Tropical and Mediterranean botanical greenhouses
  • Palm trees

All contribute to the sublime setting of an impeccable realm – a blend of colors, species, and knowledge that you cannot obtain in any other way, only by seeing them.

Global Partnerships

An extremely interesting fact about the Botanical Garden in Jibou is the partnership it holds with over 450 similar gardens around the world, to which it sends its private seed catalog, showcased annually.
