Calnic Fortress, a lesson in history amidst nature
Introduction to Calnic Fortress
Located just 40 kilometers from the municipality of Sibiu, Calnic Fortress is one of the most beautiful fortresses in Romania, built in the 13th century. The name of the locality, Calnic, is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 1269, and the fortress was constructed in the same year, initially designed as a noble residence. This is why, unlike other fortresses in Transylvania, it is not built at a high altitude as is usually the case, but is situated at a low elevation.
Architectural Features
The fortress features:
- Two defensive walls
- Two towers
- A bastion
Limestone is the primary material used in its construction. In the center of the fortress, there is a hall-type chapel.
Visitor Experience
Tourists who choose to visit Calnic Fortress should know that they can also explore the exhibition located in the cellars of one of the two towers, which focuses on viticulture. Here, visitors will be able to see:
- The tools used in this activity
- Massive barrels of up to 6,000 liters
