Karolyi Castle: A Historical Gem in Satu-Mare

By far the most important tourist attraction in Satu-Mare, the Karolyi Castle in Carei captures the mystery of times long past, beginning in the 15th century. In its early stages, a building with simple fortification elements was erected on this territory, which later became classified as a fortress for defense against the Turks.

Transformation Over Time

During this time, the nobles of the county continued to view it as a risk and even a threat, making requests for its demolition. Well, years went by, and the year 1792 marks the moment when the fortress gradually transformed into a baroque-style castle, which can be admired today. It is laid out over two floors, with 20 fabulous rooms each. Additionally, the castle housed over 60 people, including servants.

If you want to see at least one truly interesting medieval library, Karolyi Castle is the right place for you – here lie hidden 2,000 volumes in Romanian, Hungarian, German, and Latin.

A History of Change

The history of Karolyi Castle is one filled with unexpected changes. If it initially started as a simple fortification, it is also very important and interesting to observe other aspects. Thus, this castle was also used as:

  • A military garrison
  • Occupied by the Nazis
  • Later serving as a sanatorium
  • Even an agricultural high school

The castle's treasures have been stolen, destroyed, or even used as bargaining chips countless times, as few of them have survived and can still be admired today.

Legends of Karolyi Castle

Legends captivate any tourist, as the first one claims that beneath the castle lies a tunnel connecting it to the Holy Trinity Chapel, located 5 km away. It is said that the tunnel is 8 meters deep and 2 meters wide, used by Prince Rakoczi to ride his horse and hide from invaders.

Another well-known and intriguing legend among locals marks the curse of Rakoczi's daughter. It is rumored that his daughter betrayed him by revealing his secret exit to an Austrian as soon as she fell in love with him. Well, this is indeed a legend, as Rakoczi had a son and not a daughter. The curse was extremely severe, as the girl was locked in a cellar and could only appear once every 7 years. During this time, she could only marry if she made her dress with her own hands, managing to sew only once a year.

Full of mystery, the legends still echo today in the corridors of Karolyi Castle in Carei.
