Cisnădie, a Saxon town

Ladislau Ciocan
•September 16, 2013

Introduction to Cisnădie

Cisnădie is a Saxon town, founded eight centuries ago at the foot of the Cindrel Mountains, located 10 km away from Sibiu. In the Middle Ages, it was known by the German name Heltau and was famous for its workshops producing sickles and scythes, but especially for those processing cloth. This sparked envy among the most skilled craftsmen in Sibiu.

Industrial Evolution

After the 18th century, the workshops transformed into factories, and during the communist period, Cisnădie became known as a true center of the textile industry. The carpets manufactured here are sold all over the world. Today, Cisnădie is a tourist town.

Attractions in Cisnădie

The Fortified Church

When you arrive in the town of Cisnădie, your gaze will be drawn to the tower of the fortified church in the center of the town. The Bell Tower, from the Middle Ages, is the first clock tower in Transylvania and the first tower east of Vienna to have a lightning rod installed. The church, built in Gothic style on the foundations of a former Romanesque basilica in the 14th century, preserves valuable fortification and decorative elements.

The church has gathered many interesting stories and legends that the church guides are always happy to reveal to you.

Textile Industry Museum

To discover the rich industrial tradition of Cisnădie, visit the museum exhibition The History of the Textile Industry. Here, you will find displayed:

  • Flags
  • Manual wool processing tools
  • Working utensils
  • A weaving loom
  • Documents
  • Various carpet samples

Outdoor Activities

Cisnădia is the perfect place to embark on various cycling routes in the surrounding mountainous area.
