The Ethnographic Museum of the Morariu Family in Jina

Tudor-Dan Ravoiu
•September 3, 2012

Introduction

Tools for carpentry, leatherworking, blacksmithing, beekeeping, and several hundred other items, each with its own story, are housed in a museum set up in the Morariu family's home in Jina, Sibiu County. Every tourist passing through Jina should know about Ileana Morariu. Her passion for the traditions and culture of Transylvania has transformed her home into an ethnographic museum.

The Museum

In the seven rooms of her household, as well as in the shed and barn, a true museum operates, showcasing over 3,200 objects. The museum opened in 2006, and since then, her home has become a main tourist attraction in Jina.

Exhibits

Here, visitors can also see:

  • Tools used for milking cows
  • Icons
  • Peasant chests
  • Traditional clothing
  • Musical instruments including flutes
  • Wooden crosses hundreds of years old
  • Many other interesting items

You can read more about Ileana Morariu's story [here](link), and on the [official website of the museum](link) find more photos.
