The House in Alțâna
One of the most important tourist attractions in the Hârtibaciu Valley (southern Transylvania) is undoubtedly the house in the village of Alțâna, built over 500 years ago. The story of the house is as remarkable as the legends surrounding it.
Historical Significance
Constructed in 1508, the house belonged to a family of counts from the same locality and has hosted several personalities over the years. One of them is Jacob Paleologus, a descendant of the last Byzantine emperor. For a time, several Austrian officers and a family of potters also lived in the same house.
Legends and Features
One of the most beautiful legends, which has proven to be true, is related to the underground tunnel that connects the house to the evangelical church, a tunnel that was discovered a few years ago.
The house features:
- Two original windows on the façade
- Three additional side windows
- An old wooden gate
Inside, the ceiling is adorned with massive beams and doors, all dating back to the year of the building's construction, 1508.
Recent Developments
Recently, the house has been restored, and an authentic weaving workshop has been set up within its premises, where workshops for the village's youth are organized during the summer.
