The Szekler National Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe, a treasure of Transylvania's history.
Introduction
In Sfântu Gheorghe, the city located in the heart of Szeklerland, the Szekler National Museum attracts thousands of visitors from around the world each year. Indeed, you cannot leave Transylvania without learning about the history that intertwines this region and discovering more about the ethnic groups that have lived and continue to live here. It is also worth noting that this museum is the oldest in Romania, having opened in 1875.
Location and Architecture
You can find the Szekler National Museum on Kos Karoly Street in Sfântu Gheorghe, but don’t expect to find a museum like all the others. The architecture of the building housing the institution immediately reminds you that you are stepping into a place where you will learn more about the Szeklers and their history in Transylvania.
- The roof of the building is raised in a medieval style.
- Entry to the institution is through a large Szekler-style gate.
- The interior of the building is completely dressed in white, with small but numerous windows and dark-colored arches.
Museum Sections
The museum is structured into four major sections.
Archaeology and History
One of these is the archaeology and history section, where ancient painted ceramic objects dating back thousands of years are displayed, along with weapons of the Scythians and Szeklers.
Ethnographic Section
Another important section is the ethnographic one, where visitors can learn more about the traditions and rituals of the Szeklers.
- Festive attire
- Intricately carved Szekler gates
- Sculpted furniture
- Other elements from a traditional Szekler house are all exhibited in this section.
Library
Undoubtedly, the most attractive section is the library. Here, books and documents in Hungarian from the Szekler Land are kept, as well as the Apor Codex, which is over 400 years old.
Additional Information
You can find the opening hours and other information about the museum on the official website of the museum, here.
