The Simen Manor: A Historical Gem in Călimănești

Despite the fact that the year of construction has remained unknown over time, the only clue regarding the physical appearance of the fortification dates back to the incursions of Orban Balazs. Located in the town of Călimănești, Vâlcea County, this component adds a touch of antiquity to the locality, enveloping it in an aura of mystery.

Historical Significance

The importance of the Simen Manor in Călimănești goes beyond its tourist appeal; it also holds significant historical value. On July 30, 1849, the manor hosted one of the most important personalities of the time. Here, the Simen family (the owners of the entire fortification) dined with Petőfi and Jókai before heading to Cristuru Secuiesc. Furthermore, this moment is still commemorated today with a marble plaque that immortalizes the two visitors.

Sándor Petőfi: A Notable Visitor

Things become increasingly interesting once we learn who this Sándor Petőfi is, a visitor of the manor. Between 1823 and 1949, he managed to make his name known through his unique talent, thus becoming a prominent Hungarian Romantic poet.

According to legend, Sándor Petőfi spent his last days under the tree inside the Simen Manor in Călimănești, also known as the "old mulberry."

The Fortification Today

Nowadays, the fortification is in very good condition, serving as a tourist attraction chosen by thousands of new visitors each year. Additionally, the interior design of the Simen Manor is based on:

  • An immense variety of paintings and artworks, created from prestigious oils, covering all the walls and even the floor;
  • Numerous unique sculptures made of steel, using machinery from Rococo-style clocks for this purpose;
  • Striped mahogany and ivory tables, adorned with floral motifs;
  • Impressive pedestals made of colored marble;
  • Hounds displayed in the hallway, also recognized as essential accessories for any gentleman from Transylvania.

The Greenhouse and Future Plans

The Simen Manor in Călimănești impresses with its greenhouse located behind the noble house. It is abundant in tropical plants, alongside orange trees, lemon trees, and many other varieties.

As we head back inside the manor, we find a wine cellar in the basement (underneath the entire fortification), which is accessible to any tourist for a visit. Currently, renovations are still underway, as there are plans for the Simen Manor in Călimănești to become a guesthouse that can accommodate a large number of tourists, visitors, clients, or just passing travelers.

From a broader perspective, the fortification will enhance tourism in the area, as the city of Călimănești will be much more sought after for holidays and vacations by people both from within and outside our country.
