As every year, on December 28th, in Avrig and Săliște, two towns in Sibiu County, a grand celebration takes place. Young people from all over the county don their festive attire and gather to celebrate according to ancient customs.
If you're a tourist and find yourself in the Mărginimea Sibiului during this time, you must not miss the encounter with the Ceata Junilor. According to tradition, the groups of young men start gathering on December 6th, St. Nicholas Day, and for four weeks, from Christmas Eve onwards, they celebrate and sing carols.
Every year on December 28th, they meet in Săliște, in the Mărginimea Sibiului, where a large party takes place featuring traditional folk dances specific to the region each group of young men and women comes from.
Also on December 28th, another celebration occurs in Avrig, with roots that stretch back several hundred years. Known as *Meteleaua in the local vernacular, this festival marks rebirth*.
Young people from the Avrig area dress up for the occasion, and at midnight, they burn all the wood collected by the villagers for Christmas to bid farewell to this celebration.
Festivities are more beautiful when spent in Transylvania, so don’t hesitate any longer and come join the dance and good cheer!
