The resort was documented as early as 1386 and is recognized internationally. Călimănești-Căciulata, Between Tradition and Myth
Legend has it that the benefits of the thermal waters in Călimănești were discovered by a shepherd, who confessed to the monks at Cozia Monastery that he had been healed of his bodily ailments by bathing in a lake in the "field of Căliman." Following the shepherd's confession, the monks found springs around the monastery from which "sulfur stone cures" (sulfur) flowed. Next to the monastery, a "bolniță" was built, a hospital where sick people come to seek treatment.
In 1859, Dr. Joseph Caillat conducted an analysis of the mineral waters of the resort to highlight their therapeutic qualities. A year later, the mineral waters of the resort were recognized internationally and enjoyed European fame. Even Emperor Napoleon III regularly consumed the water from Călimănești. It was bottled and sent to Paris for his consumption. These waters were comparable to the similar waters of the thermal resorts in France.
