The Leaning Tower of Ruși

The Leaning Tower of Ruși

Located just 25 kilometers from Sibiu, on the way to Mediaș, lies the beautiful and quaint village of Ruși. No, we are not talking about native Russians, but rather the name of a locality that hosts a potential second Leaning Tower of Pisa. You surely know what I’m talking about, but you probably don’t know that in Romania, in our beautiful little country, there is a structure that can be compared to the grand and magnificent tower in Pisa. Well, yes, it really exists! It is the Leaning Tower of Ruși, not far from Sibiu.

Promotion Challenges

Despite the fact that millions of people pay good money to see a leaning tower, a certain immeasurable phenomenon of nature, few rush to Ruși – and that is due to the lack of promotion. Romania is an exceptional country, with fortifications of impeccable splendor, but what is completely lacking is promotion. But let’s hear more about this leaning tower in Ruși!

Visiting the Tower

Once you arrive in the village area, you might miss the leaning tower, given that there is no sign, no indication, nothing that would make you turn your gaze toward it. Fortunately, however, the tilt of the building would easily catch your attention if you are a little observant.

Timing of Your Visit

What is imperative to add here is the timing of your visit – now – because, due to the lack of restorations, who knows how long it will stand before it collapses.

Global Comparison

It is said to be the second most inclined tower in the world, right after the famous tower in Pisa. However, the issue lies in the promotion, which is utterly absent. Can you imagine what this location would become if the nationality issue were resolved?

In fact, let’s lay the cards on the table: it seems that this tower was built in 1750 by the Saxons, which is why Romanians do not touch it. Well, no one has touched it in over 100 years, which is why now no one is interested in it, and there is no desire for it to be restored anytime soon.

Local Legend

The legend told by the locals regarding the Leaning Tower of Ruși suggests that the fortification has always been tilted, as the craftsmen did a shoddy job. In fact, the tower began to lean 100 years after its construction due to some landslides.
