The beauty of the city of Oradea greets the numerous tourists arriving from the west and north of the country, thanks to its grand architectural monuments. Among these is the Black Eagle Palace, one of the imposing buildings of 20th century Romania. We mention this because its construction began in 1907 and was nearly completed by 1908.

Architectural Details

Regarding the overall vision and finished technical details, the palace's engineer was chosen to be Ferenc Sztarill, who was also the contractor that aligned his plan with that of the architects who implemented it – namely the Oradeans Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakob. Before establishing the Black Eagle Palace in Oradea, this territory was home to the Green Tree Palace, renowned for the cultural, traditional, and political events that took place there.

Structural Arrangement

Since those times, the necessity for the structural arrangement of the building, based on the visual capacity from every angle, has been emphasized. Thus, the palace is divided into:

• Four floors
• A ground floor that structurally combines the height of two floors

The layout of the Black Eagle Palace consists of two bodies separated by a glass passage. Moreover, the Oradean workshop Neumann K. created the stained glass featuring the black eagle, which serves as the palace's symbol, at the express request of the architects.

Practical Utility

According to an informal ranking based on the monuments and fortifications found in the city of Oradea, the Black Eagle Palace stands out not only for its beauty but also for its practical utility. Thus, immediately after its inauguration, it was transformed into:

1. A casino
2. A hotel
3. An office building
4. A restaurant
5. Other such activities

For maximized functionality, the fortification was then delineated based on three asymmetrically arranged bodies.

Current Use

Nowadays, the Black Eagle Palace in Oradea is home to a renowned hotel, while also hosting a cinema and a bank. What is interesting is the functionality of several clubs, alongside cafes and restaurants.

Furthermore, the fortification is a central point for social gatherings and meetings in the area, attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world each year.
