The Steingasser Tower in Mediaș

Tudor-Dan Ravoiu
•November 19, 2012

History of the Tower

Built between 1507 and 1534, the tower is one of the eight defensive structures erected in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Mediaș Fortress. Standing at a height of 25.8 meters, it was once the site of the activities of the stone masons and bricklayers' guild.

Significance and Location

The tower is one of the most significant landmarks of Mediaș, located in the northern part of the city, and it served as one of the main access points into the town.

Damage and Renovation

In 1705, the building was severely damaged during the invasion of the Kuruc army. Forty years later, the tower was renovated, and on that occasion, a document was placed within it stating:

“The unfaithful band of the Racoțians made their lack of humanity felt, their fury upon this faithful town, both on the citizens and on the houses, the defensive walls, and the bastions, but the tower rose from its ruins like the Phoenix bird that is reborn from its own ashes.”

Architectural Modifications

Following the repairs in the 18th century, the architectural elements of the tower were modified, replaced with defensive features to enhance the building's defensive capabilities.

  • The classic firing openings were replaced with keyhole-shaped ones to accommodate firearms.
  • The slope of the roof was altered.
