Discover the village of Viscri: one of the most beautiful villages in Europe.

Introduction

Few know that in 2010, Travel and Leisure magazine declared that alongside famous areas across Europe, the village of Viscri, in Brașov County, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in Europe. Located a bit off the main road connecting Brașov to Sighișoara, the village boasts one of the six Saxon fortresses listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is also one of the favorite destinations of Prince Charles of Great Britain when he spends his holidays in Romania.

Preservation of Tradition

The distance of nearly 10 kilometers from the main road has allowed this locality to remain almost unchanged, so some of the village's streets are still paved with river stones. The fortress may not be as imposing as the one in Biertan, for example, but it houses a museum showcasing tools used by ancient locals in their daily activities, in workshops, or in the fields.

Exhibitions

In the "Slăninii Tower," where supplies were kept during invasions, there is another exhibition where tourists can see:

  • Beehives
  • Weaving looms
  • Spinning wheels
  • Chests for storing grains
  • Other objects that belonged to the Saxons here

The Village's Atmosphere

Otherwise, the village gives a sense of desolation: all the houses are old, few have been renovated, and many are left empty. Those who wish to visit this incredibly beautiful locality can do so especially in the autumn months, when the landscape is most vividly colored.
