The Fortress of Mediaș
The city of Mediaș boasts one of the most beautiful fortresses in the Transylvania region – and no, we are not talking about a limited number of such constructions, especially considering that within a distance of 30 kilometers, you will surely encounter a fortification in one form or another. Built as early as 1477, its primary purpose was defense against enemy invasions. At that time, any movement and every passing second could have wiped everything out of the city, making its importance even greater.
Construction Timeline
Construction began in 1490 and was not completed until much later, in 1534. It is interesting to analyze this period, as the timeframe is quite long, and the results are commensurate. Logistically, the fortification stretches over a length of 2,360 meters, representing a true arsenal for any marauder.
Renovation Efforts
Over time, the fortress and the entire fortification have required significant renovations to ensure their survival for years to come. Thus, between 2007 and 2013, the POR project funded by European funds was underway. Its objective was to rehabilitate over 7,736 square meters formed by medieval walls, along with two towers and a bastion, in total – but it required extensions.
Funding and Improvements
Regarding the non-repayable amount allocated by the European Union, this sum reaches 26 million euros. With this money, the fortified walls and towers benefit from a new lighting system, in a cool white color, shaping an aura of mystery in the areas. Additionally, the walls are set to be illuminated with a warm yet pale light, providing an aura of safety and security, in stark contrast to the cold and mysterious feeling of the other color.
Targeted Structures
At the same time, the targeted towers are:
- Stonecutters' Tower
- Rotarians' Tower
- Cutlers' Bastion
All of which will be replaced with specific wooden joinery. Furthermore, for those who wish to enjoy the fresh air and green spaces, there are plans to create bike paths, allowing anyone to take a quick and safe stroll through these areas.
Future Prospects
Immediately after the renovation, the fortified walls and towers of Mediaș will attract more and more tourists eager to see the new face of this city. It is beautiful, and it truly is a great loss not to have such renovations, for sooner or later, we realize that our constructions remain.
