The Dacian Fortress of Sarmizegetusa Regia

The Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa Regia is located in the Orăștie Mountains and is the largest of the Dacian fortifications. It sits on Grădiștea Hill, atop a cliff at an altitude of 1200 meters, and was the strategic center of the Dacian defensive system in the Orăștie Mountains.

Maintenance and Accessibility

The Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa Regia was closed from December 1 to March 1 for maintenance work necessary in the area occupied by the UNESCO monument.

To better highlight the area, several terraces of underbrush and timber have been cleared, providing a new perspective on what Sarmizegetusa Regia meant as a settlement.

Historical Significance

Sarmizegetusa Regia was the capital of pre-Roman Dacia and reached its peak under the reign of Decebal. After the defeat of the Dacian king by the Roman Empire, the conquerors began to demolish the fortress.

The new Roman capital was built 40 km away from Sarmizegetusa Regia and was called Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa. This was intended to be a continuation of the Dacian one, which is why it was also given the name *Sarmizegetusa*.

Today, on the site of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, there is a locality.
