A new element of breathtaking beauty in Bistrița-Năsăud County is the Ciceu Fortress. Built towards the end of the 13th century, the fortification served a strategic purpose due to its excellent positioning. To be more specific, it is essential to mention that it was erected on a volcanic hill at an altitude of 683 meters. This is also where the origin of the name *Ciceu* comes from, specifically from the Hungarian translation of the word.
Although Ciceu Fortress dates back over 8 centuries, not much is known about its history to this day. Starting from October 1, 1467, by which time the fortification was under the ownership of Ladislau Senior, Junior, and Sigismund, Ciceu Fortress was quickly confiscated and entirely taken over by the Diet of Turda. At that time, over two-thirds of all assets were seized without reason. Over the years, the initial owners initiated legal claims, but in the end, the fortress never returned to their possession.
A little later, between 1486 and 1490, the fortification came under the ownership of Stephen the Great, alongside the Fortress of Bălata. However, in the following years, Ciceu Fortress was transferred from one owner to another, confiscated and taken over without further details. From what is known, the last ruler who managed to take possession of the fortification was Alexandru Lăpușneanu. The entire process largely relied on coercive force through weapons and ammunition.
The current situation of Ciceu Fortress is not favorable, given that time has left its mark on the fortification. In terms of reconstruction, the process is relatively impossible, as the polygonal shape is not perfect, and the altitude at which it is situated does not ease the situation at all.
Even so, Ciceu Fortress can be easily and quickly visited, based on road signs. These refer to Ciceu and Dumbrăveni, localities you need to follow to reach your destination.
Additionally, today Ciceu Fortress lies in ruins, as locals have caused even the last millstones to be destroyed, leading to the rapid collapse of the walls. However, the beauty and prosperity of the surrounding landscape, along with the fresh air, will make you want to return to these lands sprinkled with abundance and beauty, especially inner beauty. It remains solely your choice to decide when you will take this step.
