Introduction to Băgaciu

Băgaciu, or *Bogeschdorf as it is called in German, is a village located 30 kilometers from Mediaș, first documented in 1351. Sheltered from the main roads that traverse Transylvania, Băgaciu has remained a village where traditions and customs are still alive today. The main attraction in this locality is the Evangelical church* and the story that surrounds it.

The Evangelical Church

Built at the end of the 14th century, all the stone used for the construction of the church was brought by cart from the Cibin Mountains, over 140 kilometers away, an impressive distance considering the time period.

Construction Details

  • The volume of raw material required was substantial, as the church has impressive dimensions.
  • Surrounding the church is an oval fortification, with defensive walls reaching up to eight meters in height.
  • Many years ago, the wooden watch path could still be seen, but it has since disappeared.
