The Living Fire Cave

Introduction

Nestled in the Bihor Mountains, along the Yellow Valley, at an altitude of 1,165 meters, the ineffable Focul Viu Cave is a natural wonder that leaves every visitor captivated by its unique story and crystal-clear views. To reach it more easily, the cave is located within the Apuseni Natural Park – but regardless, anyone you ask will have undoubtedly heard of this inexplicable creation of nature.

The Cave's Structure

Returning to the subject, to enter the cave, given the not-so-favorable natural conditions, two halls have been constructed:

  • The Great Hall: nearly 46 meters high and 68 meters long. Here, the stalagmites create dazzling reflections that astonish any tourist in search of a visual natural adventure.

The Legend of Focul Viu Cave

What is of real interest regarding the Focul Viu Cave is that, when bathed in sunlight, it transforms into a true ball of flames – one with a significant impact, destined to make you return year after year. Ranking third in size among underground glaciers, the Focul Viu Cave hides a legend that makes the reserve not only dark but also full of mystery.

It is said that in the past, Decebal sheltered a family of giants in the Apuseni Mountains, using them as guardians of the gold hidden in the cave. Due to predators coveting the treasure, at one point, one of them managed to poison the youngest of the family by luring him with food. Naturally, the boy died, followed by all the predators who were caught under the boulders that fell increasingly faster. Stricken with grief, the old giant moved the earth, from which the hills and caves of the area were formed. True or not, the legend serves as the fundamental argument behind the natural construction of breathtaking beauty, almost inexplicable if you are unaware of the scientific idea behind it.

Visiting Focul Viu Cave

Without a doubt, if you find yourself in the Bihor Mountains, the Focul Viu Cave should not be missing from your itinerary – moreover, it should particularly be at the top of your list. Decebal's treasure can still be easily visited today, and the beauty of the morning in that place will not go unrewarded, at least on a mental level.

An important thing to know here is that from the forestry cabin in Valea Cetăților, the journey is made on foot.
