Church of "Saint Apostles Peter and Paul"

Alongside the Ursuline Church and the Evangelical Church, another church in Sibiu stands out among the must-see attractions for any tourist visiting the city on the Cibin River. This is the Church of "Saint Apostles Peter and Paul."

Historical Significance

Known among the people of Sibiu mainly as the Church among the Fir Trees due to the fir trees surrounding it, this place of worship was built in 1788, making it the oldest Romanian church in Sibiu. It was founded by Bishop Inocențiu Micu Klein, and initially, the church was of the Greek-Catholic faith.

The construction, located at 17 Reconstrucției Street, is built in the Baroque style, showcasing several elements of this style on its facades. It appears as a hall church that supports a dome on an oval drum. Both the facade and the interior feature Baroque elements such as:

  • Massive columns
  • Pilasters
  • Shell motifs

Cemetery and Notable Figures

The church also has a cemetery where important funerary monuments of George Barițiu, Papiu Ilarian, Ioan Rațiu, and other notable figures can be found. In the small cemetery surrounding the church, there are numerous funerary monuments declared historical monuments:

  1. Ghe. Barițiu (1812-1893)

The funerary monument, consisting of a black marble obelisk, was erected by the family in 1900 and belongs to the craftsman I. Roubischeck.

  1. Al. Papiu Ilarian (1828-1877)

The monument was erected in 1880 by the sculptor Carol Cauner. The white marble bust is placed on a fluted column of 1.27 m.

  1. David Urs (1816 - 1897)

The monument is made of white stone.

  1. Ioan Rațiu (1828 - 1902)

The monument is a 3-meter tall black marble obelisk.

  1. Iosif Sterca Sulutiu (1827 - 1911)

The monument is a 2.8-meter tall black marble obelisk, created by I. Roubischeck.
