The Fortified Church in Prejmer

One of the most beautiful fortified churches in Transylvania is the one in Prejmer, Brașov County. But it is not just its beauty that matters; the dimensions of the fortress are also significant. The thick walls, four meters wide and twelve meters high, make it the most imposing fortified church in southeastern Europe.

History of the Fortified Church

The history of the fortified church in Prejmer begins in the 13th century, just like many other constructions of this kind in Transylvania. At that time,

King Andrew II

It granted the Teutonic Knights the right to the areas along the banks of the Tarlung River, and construction of the fortified structure began. The church was built in the shape of a Greek cross, and the fortress of which it is a part was attacked 50 times by the Ottoman army, yet it was never conquered by the Turks. The fortress has over 270 rooms that housed supplies during the invasions.

Visiting the Fortress

Those wishing to visit this fortress should also know that in 2012, it was among the sites visited by Prince Charles, a true lover of the beauties of Transylvania.
