The Ancient Tree of Blaj

In the town of Blaj, right in the center of the municipality, there has lived for six centuries an ancient tree that can be said to have seen it all. Avram Iancu's oak is part of a list of protected trees alongside several dozen others from across the country. Just like the other trees, it hides a beautiful story beneath its lush crown.

Historical Significance

It is said that at the foot of this oak, General Anton Caraffa, renowned for his multiple sieges in Transylvania, held negotiations with Prince Mihai Apafi II for the annexation of Transylvania to the Habsburg Empire at the end of the 17th century.

The Legend of 1848

However, the most beautiful legend is linked to the Revolution of 1848, named in memory of the over 6,000 Moți present in Blaj for the assemblies. It is also said that in the shade of the old tree, Avram Iancu would often sit and sing songs of mourning.
