The Trumpeters' Tower: A Unique Wonder
The Trumpeters' Tower in the Mediaș fortress is among the top ten tilted constructions in the world, with some claiming it ranks second globally, just after the much more famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, behind the construction of this 68.5-meter tall tower lie some delightful legends.
Legends Behind the Tower
The Ambitious Construction
It is said that five centuries ago, when the work began, the officials in Mediaș wanted the tower to rival the St. Stephen's Tower in Vienna. So towards the end of the construction, they decided to raise it by three more stories, resulting in the tower's current height.
Divine Anger and Folklore
One legend suggests that this very height angered God, who tilted the tower, much like in the story of the *Tower of Babel*. Another legend speaks of how, at the end of the construction, after noticing that the tower was built crooked, the workers tried to straighten it with ropes.
- One of those pulling the rope saw a young lady and forgot to stop, causing the tower to tilt in the opposite direction by an additional 2.29 meters.
The Name and Purpose of the Tower
The Trumpeters' Tower got its name due to its height. After the construction was completed, the tower was topped with four additional turrets to show the world that the city of Mediaș also had a court. Additionally, a lookout point was established at its peak, from where one could see several kilometers around Mediaș.
There was a trumpeter in the tower whose duty was to alert the population in case of fire, invasions, or other dangers. It is said that when they made mistakes, the trumpeters were often thrown from the top of the tower as a form of punishment.
