Szekely Tamadt Medieval Fortress

Introduction

As a significant historical monument, the medieval fortress Szekely Tamadt has been attracting tourists of all ages to the Odorheiului Secuiesc area for years. Positioned within the city, close to its old center, the fortification is surrounded on both sides by various bastions, such as Foris, Hajdu, Banffy, and Telegdy. For a long time, they served a defensive role, stopping any predator wishing to conquer the imposing fortress.

Historical Background

Located in Harghita County, the year 1490 marked the first time the cornerstone was brought and placed for the construction of the fortification that can be seen and visited even at this moment. To reach the fortress, the road is not as winding as it might seem – all you need to do is set your GPS to Tompa Laszlo Street, number 12, where the Szekely Tamadt fortress eagerly awaits your visit!

Construction and Changes

Its history is a bit more convoluted than the road itself, given that over time it has undergone numerous changes:

  1. The failed attempt by Bathory Istvan between 1490-1492 to transform it into a fortified castle.
  2. Later, Janos Zsigmond, also known as the Prince of Transylvania, reconstructed the attacked fortress in 1562.

Decrees and Renaming

What is extremely interesting about the medieval fortress Szekely Tamadt is the 1706 decree stating that its existence was diminished, wishing to be destroyed. Since then, the fortification has been known as "*Cetatea Ciuntă*," a name referring to the accumulation of unfortunate events that marred its beauty.

The Kuruc Uprising and Aftermath

After the destruction of the fortress by Perky's order, the kuruc uprising led to a happy yet independent ending for the fortification, as the year 1852 was decisive in making a decision directly involving it. Thus, after arduous negotiations, the ruins were purchased by the host city, from which materials were later used, after 40 years, to build the State Real School that can be visited by any knowledge-thirsty tourist.

Present Day

Today, the Szekely Tamadt Medieval Fortress is recognized as a military monument, with a heritage dating back to the 16th century. The characteristic Renaissance style can be admired during a simple visit to the fortress, whether it is made by train, personal car, or even by bus. Any means of transportation can be useful to reach and visit the besieged and reconstructed fortification through the passage of time.
