The city of Mediaș

Introduction

Sibiu County is home to many municipalities rich in history and traditions that are still kept alive, especially due to the numerous tourist attractions and the local people, who bring with them stories that enhance the dreamlike scenery. Among these, the city of Mediaș stands out as the second largest. Of course, the first is Sibiu itself, with the two areas separated by a corridor of approximately 55 kilometers.

Historical Background

The city officially dates back to June 3, 1267, when the first legally recognized inscription was made. A little later, starting in 1289, the location took on the name *terra Medies, a designation that characterized it until the end of 1308*.

Over time, ownership changed hands. In 1315, the rightful owner of the province, the Hungarian King Charles Robert of Anjou, made a change and stipulated that all rights of the locality be placed in the hands of the residents living in the Mediaș area.

However, it took much longer for it to achieve city status. It was not until 1359 that Mediaș received this official designation for the first time. Additionally, the first hospital was built in 1487, and in 1586, the city's first school appeared.

Development and Industrialization

Logistically, it seems that street public lighting began its operation in 1863, followed by the industrial revolution that brought with it the establishment of numerous cooperatives and factories, including:

• The construction of other types of schools and several hospitals (directly proportional to the ever-increasing population)

Methane gas is just one of the highly important links for the city of Mediaș. Due to the exponential economic and industrial development it experienced, today the locality boasts a wealth of tourist attractions. Every visitor should make their way to visit:

• The fortified church of Saint Margaret (home to Gothic mural paintings)

• The medieval monuments located in the center of the castle square
