The fortified church in Roșia, one of the forgotten treasures of Transylvania.

Ladislau Ciocan

Introduction to Roșia

Documented since 1327, the village of Roșia, located just a few kilometers from the city of Sibiu, hides a lost treasure right in the heart of Romania. The fortified church here is one of the oldest in Transylvania, built over 700 years ago, in 1225, even before the village of Roșia was officially documented.

The Fortified Church

Interestingly, the church is still well-preserved today, and the 8-meter tall defensive tower is visible and even has a clock, although it is unfortunately not functional. Regular services are held in the church of Roșia, even though the number of Saxons remaining here can be counted on one hand. Responsible for the services in the fortified church is none other than:

  • Eginal Schlatter, the writer
  • The author of the novel The Decapitated Rooster, which you will have every chance of finding in the church if you go there in the middle of the day.

The Natural Beauty of Roșia

But Roșia hides not only the treasure of a church that is over 700 years old, but also landscapes that make Transylvania so beloved.

Getting to Roșia

So if you want to reach Roșia, you need to follow, from Sibiu, the DJ106 road towards Agnita. As soon as you see the sign for Daia, turn left and then in a few minutes you will arrive in Roșia.
