Discover life as it was in 1600 in the village of Stejărișu.
Stejărișu: A Hidden Gem in Hârtibaciu Valley
One of the most beautiful villages in the Hârtibaciu Valley is undoubtedly Stejărișu. Located near Agnita, the story of this locality begins in 1223, when it was first documented. However, its location in those times was entirely different from today, as it was situated next to a valley that flooded the households every spring.
Historical Significance
Like many other villages in southern Transylvania, in the 16th century, a fortification was built around the church, used for defense during invasions. One of the attractions that still stands today is the Slăninii Tower, where in the past families from the village stored their winter supplies or during attacks.
Restoration Efforts
In the last century, however, the village fell into obscurity, with the number of tourists here being nearly zero, and the fortification of rare beauty began to deteriorate. In 2007, however, the Austrian Embassy in Romania, along with several private companies, started a project to restore the village.
Key Restoration Achievements
- The parish house and the Slăninii Tower were rehabilitated and transformed into true museums.
- Blacksmith, carpentry, and sewing workshops were built in the village where people can work.
- Over 40 houses in the village had their facades renovated, all connected to the water and sewage network.
Modern-Day Stejărișu
Today, a walk through the streets of Stejărișu is a true pleasure. Everything will help your mind imagine what life was like in the 1600s.
