Overview of Agârbiciu

Agârbiciu is a village located in the northern part of Sibiu County, 19 km from Mediaș and 38 km from Sibiu, belonging to the commune of Axente Sever. The first documented mention of the locality dates back to 1343, when it is referred to as a Saxon settlement belonging to the *Şeica Seat*.

The Fortified Church

The fortified church in Agârbiciu, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is built on a hill in the middle of the village and dates back to the early 15th century. The church is first documented in 1415 and was constructed in the Gothic style.

Architectural Features

  • The vault of the hall was once covered with a network of ribs, as confirmed by the discovery of a fragment from one of the ribs.
  • The church's enclosure is oval-shaped, protected by a single row of walls, which average a height of 6 meters.
  • In the northwest, there is the gate tower, above an entrance tunnel supported by three transverse arches.
  • To the east is a narrow and long building that served as a pantry for storing bacon.
