Feldioara Fortress: A Historical Gem

Just a few kilometers within Brașov County, Feldioara Fortress is located in the commune of the same name. Built on Transylvanian soil, this breathtaking beauty has existed and endured since it was constructed in the 13th century.

Historical Significance

Over time, Feldioara Fortress has been the subject of extensive debates, from which it has emerged, with clear evidence, that it was built by the Teutonic Knights in Transylvania. Currently, although time has passed, Feldioara Fortress is classified as a historical monument, albeit in a deplorable state. For several years, the ruins have been waiting to be restored and brought together, in order to attract more and more tourists eager to learn about its history.

Location and Accessibility

For better localization, it is imperative to provide more details. Thus, the village of Feldioara is situated just 17 kilometers north of Brașov city – about half an hour by car. At first, you might think that, being a ruin, it is not worth the effort – however, be prepared to discover more about this formidable fortress!

Archaeological Evidence

To some extent, it is believed that this territory has been inhabited for a very long time, dating back to the Neolithic period. This is evidenced by:

  • Pottery sites
  • Graceful gold objects
  • A treasure consisting of 21 Roman coins

Names and Translations

Nevertheless, Feldioara Fortress has numerous names, depending on the language. Thus, translated into Hungarian, it is "*Földvár," while in German, it translates to "Maria's Fortress*." Nothing easier, nothing harder. But let’s focus more on the history of the fortification.

The Role of the Teutonic Knights

In this way, the Teutonic Knights, following the agreement received from Andrew II, managed to operate in this area with the exclusive purpose of defending it in case of necessity. Their main enemies were the Cumans. Even though the Teutons did their job as best as they could, in 1430, Feldioara Fortress was destroyed by the Turks and again during Vlad Țepeș's campaign in 1457.

The locals largely managed to restore and rebuild the fortress from the remaining aspects, but nothing could be exactly as it was. Nevertheless, it would be a great pity, if you find yourself in Brașov, not to take a quick trip to Feldioara to enjoy the fresh air and the stunning views.
