Sibiu, a medieval fortress

The Medieval Fortress of Sibiu

Sibiu has been established as a true medieval fortress since its founding by the Saxons in the 12th century. Over the course of three centuries, the fortress of Sibiu was fortified with strong defensive walls, bastions, and tall towers. The brick walls and stone towers could be seen from great distances, instilling fear in invaders. They referred to Sibiu as the "*Red City*."

Cetății Street

One of the most beautiful promenades in the old town of Sibiu is Cetății Street. This street retains its original appearance from the 16th century, with fortification walls, towers, and bastions.

Defensive Structures

On the southern side of the fortress, we can admire two defensive walls and three towers:

  • Potters' Tower
  • Carpenters' Tower
  • Arquebusiers' Tower
  • The former Thick Tower

Bastions and Passageways

The Haller and Cisnădiei Bastions are located immediately beyond the fortification walls. On the northern side of the Sibiu fortress lies the Stairway Passage, a series of well-preserved fortification walls built in the 13th century. This passage connects the Upper Town and the Lower Town.

From above the fortification walls, near the Evangelical Church, one can admire the panorama of the Lower Town.
