Located in the town of Carei, Karolyi Castle hides a history worthy of a wartime novel. The Karolyi family were the first members to own this fortification, which initially served as their personal residence. This moment is marked by the 15th century, and much later, a siege was requested by nobles.
Foreseeing the danger posed by enemies, specifically the Turks who wished to demonstrate their prowess by demolishing the residence, in the 17th century, the fortification underwent rapid improvements. The most visible of these were the ditches and walls equipped with bastions at various points. Thus, the residence began to be referred to as a fortress, included in the defense zone against Turkish marauders.
Once attacked, the fortification endured the siege quite heavily, suffering significant damage. However, in the fight against the Turks, Karolyi Fortress prevailed abundantly. It was not until 1708 that restoration work was completed, marking the transition from fortress to Karolyi Castle.
Upon hearing this news, notable personalities made time and arrangements to visit and cross its threshold. Among them, we mention:
Although the details of Karolyi Castle are simply exceptional, the residence has remained uninhabited since 1907. This is the moment when Stefan Karolyi passed away, and the family members wished to reside in another establishment. Compositional-wise, Karolyi Castle retained a low number of furniture and decoration items, but the interwar period managed to somewhat restore a number of valuable objects that were rightfully returned to the owning family.
The interwar years also brought major changes to the practical utility of Karolyi Castle:
