In a peasant house in Crișeni, Harghita County, a true museum of straw hats has been organized. All this is to promote and carry on the tradition known throughout Transylvania and beyond.
For those who don’t know, the art of weaving straw hats is over 150 years old. Thus, in the rooms of the house-museum, hats worn by Romanians, Hungarians, and Saxons from Transylvania have been displayed.
The museum also features a room showcasing decorative items:
Here, visitors can learn how hats and straw objects were made, with old tools used for weaving exhibited in one of the rooms.
The highlight of the museum is the hat with a diameter of two meters and weighing 2.65 kilograms, making it the largest wearable hat in the country. 500 meters of straw and 1.5 kilometers of thread were used to weave it.
To visit the museum, once you arrive in Crișeni, ask for Szocs Lajos. He will be more than happy to open up for you in case the museum is closed.
