Natural wool socks from the village of Viscri

Ladislau Ciocan
•September 24, 2012

Introduction

Beyond the fact that Viscri is one of the Transylvanian villages that Prince Charles has fallen in love with, the village in Brașov County stands out for another reason: the natural wool socks crocheted by the women of the village. The fame of these socks has reached beyond borders, so that each month, approximately 90% of the production from the women of Viscri makes its way to Germany.

The Beginning of the Business

The business started over ten years ago when a German family settled in Viscri and offered the women this opportunity to earn some extra money.

  • One by one, the women joined the association.
  • At one point, more than 1,000 pairs of socks were leaving Viscri for stores in Germany.

Current Developments

Today, if you visit Viscri on a sunny day, it is almost impossible not to notice a few women gathered together in the shade of a tree, with crochet hooks and wool.

Over time, the business has developed, and today, the women of Viscri also crochet:

  • Sweaters
  • Scarves
  • Hats
  • Vests
  • Gloves
