Porolissum Fortress, one of the most beautiful in Transylvania.
Introduction to Porolissum Fortress
Less known than other fortresses in Transylvania such as those in Sighișoara, Biertan, Corvin Castle, or Bran Castle, the Porolissum Fortress is one of the few Roman castra that still stand today and are very well preserved.
Location and Historical Significance
Located just 15 kilometers from Zalău, in Sălaj County, specifically near the village of Moigrad, the history of this settlement, of which the Praetoria Gate is the best preserved today, begins somewhere in the 1st century when Emperor Trajan established the founding of this settlement, which served to defend the main passage from the Carpathians into the Roman province of Dacia Porolissensis.
At one moment, there were over 5,000 Roman soldiers brought from Britain, Gaul, Germany, Spain, and Syria. During just 150 years, the fortress developed significantly, having a population of over 15,000 people and became known primarily for its commercial capabilities.
Architectural Features
At the height of the settlement's glory, the fortress had:
- Public baths
- A temple
- An amphitheater
- Other representative Roman elements
The Aurelian Retreat
After the Aurelian Retreat, a large part of the population left the city, and soon it became completely abandoned.
