Red Lake

Introduction

Did you know that... Lake Red is also known as Ghilcos Lake? Whatever the name, it is certain that the lake is a natural dam type, created by nature as a result of a landslide in 1838. That year, on January 23, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred right at the base of Mount Hășmașul Mare in Harghita County.

Nowadays, Lake Red has:

  • A perimeter of 2,830 meters
  • An area of 114,676 square meters
  • A volume of no less than 587,503 cubic meters

What is extremely interesting is its altitude, which is 983 meters.

Legends and Etymology

Lake Red is not exempt from legend. Thus, etymologically, its name is derived from the Red Creek, which has its red color from iron oxides and hydroxides. Interestingly, the name comes from German, and the translation leads us to the name of the Killer Lake - it is said that in the past, the collapse of that land led to the destruction of a village and its inhabitants who were in those lands.

Moreover, the red color of the water is actually the blood it collected from the poor people. Therefore, the name is not just Lake Red, but also Killer Lake. This secondary name appeared later, after 1936.

Location and Hydrology

Regarding its location, Lake Red can be found in the center of the distance between Suhardul Mic and Suhardul Mare. Given that no lake can live and exist without correspondents, Lake Red is constantly fed by:

  • Four large streams
  • Twelve temporary watercourses, among which we mention:

- Verescheul

- Licosul

- Suhardul

- Oii

- Ucigașul

Natural Beauty and Benefits

The beauty and true scenery of nature in the Lake Red region should not be overlooked. Moreover, the surroundings of the lake are extremely beneficial for remedying:

  • Exhaustion
  • Insomnia
  • Neurasthenia

Due to the aerosols, lack of wind, pure air, and picturesque views, Lake Red is a perfect choice for both young and old. Not to mention that it is internationally recognized, which is why most foreigners who arrive in Romania are eager to visit these lands they have heard of and wish to see with their own eyes.

Conclusion

Thus, Lake Red is an opportune choice for those who want to enjoy the beauty of our country's nature and, why not, to offer peace and joy to the soul and human body.
