In the heart of Transylvania, in the locality of Bonțida, Cluj County, lies one of the most emblematic castles in the region - Bánffy Castle. Between August 2-15, 2026, the Transylvania Trust Foundation is organizing the Restoration Camp at Bánffy Castle, a landmark event for the salvation of Transylvanian heritage. This exceptional educational and practical initiative is addressed to those eager to learn techniques for conserving historical monuments and actively contribute to the salvation of this cultural treasure.
Bánffy Castle in Bonțida is one of the oldest and most important historical monuments in Transylvania. Built in the 15th century, the castle was the residence of the noble Bánffy family, one of the most influential families in the region. Over time, the castle has been modified and extended, but despite these changes, it has preserved its historic atmosphere and character. Currently, the castle is undergoing restoration, and participants in the Bonțida camp will have the opportunity to contribute to the salvation of this cultural treasure.
The Restoration Camp at Bánffy Castle is a unique opportunity for students from faculties of architecture and related fields to learn techniques for conserving historical monuments. Participants will work directly on-site, under the guidance of experts in the field, and will have access to top-notch materials and techniques for restoring the castle's elements. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to engage in various cultural and social activities, such as guided tours, workshops, and cultural events.
To support student participation in this initiative, the Order of Architects of Romania (OAR) is offering dedicated scholarships under the auspices of the Timbrul de Arhitectură program. These scholarships will cover the costs of participating in the Bonțida camp, offering students the opportunity to engage in this profound cultural experience.
Beyond the restoration of the castle's elements, the program highlights the importance of craftsmanship and preserving authentic rural identity. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about traditional construction and restoration techniques, as well as the importance of preserving cultural and natural heritage in the region.
In close connection with these efforts to valorize heritage is the "Țara Colibelor" initiative, which promotes vernacular architecture and Transylvanian constructive traditions. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of preserving cultural and natural heritage in the region, as well as promoting sustainable development of rural communities.
Registrations for the Restoration Camp at Bánffy Castle in Bonțida are now open. Participants must register by July 15, 2026, by completing a registration form and sending it to the organizers' email address. More details about the program and registrations can be found on the official website of the Transylvania Trust Foundation.
