Introduction to Ocna Sibiului
Ocna Sibiului is worth visiting not only for those in love with saltwater or in need of specialized treatment. The 50 lakes that make up the salt complex of Ocna Sibiului each represent a tourist attraction in their own right.
The Bottomless Lake
The most famous of these lakes is generically named "Bottomless Lake," located in the city's Public Park. However, the name may disappoint us, as it has a depth of 34 meters.
Salinity and Formation
The salinity measured at its maximum depth is truly impressive, exceeding 300 grams per liter. The lake was formed following the collapse of a former salt mine at the end of the 18th century.
Unique Characteristics
The generic title of "bottomless lake" is also attributed to its specific characteristics, as it exhibits the phenomenon of "heliothermy" – the water temperature remains approximately the same during both summer and winter, due to the very high salinity.
