The Schuller House in Mediaș

Without a doubt, anyone passing through the Old Town of Mediaș will notice the Schuller House, an architectural monument whose age is only estimated. It is said that the building located on the eastern side of the center was constructed in 1588, but recent studies have shown that it is at least a hundred years older.

Historical Significance

Built by the former mayor of Mediaș, Johannes Schuller, over time the house has hosted several princes from Transylvania, including Prince Sigismund Bathory. Access to the inner courtyard of the U-shaped building is through a vaulted passage framed by two pillars, upon which two stone lions are sculpted.

Functionality Over Time

After the 18th century, the house functioned as a brewery and inn, being mentioned several times in the official documents of those times. This is because the building was often used as a meeting point for authorities, featuring:

  • A conference room with over 130 seats
  • Exhibition halls
  • Guest rooms

After 1990, the Schuller House was leased to the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, and since then, it has frequently hosted exhibitions and plastic art workshops from the artistic circles of Mediaș.
