Șeica Mică

Introduction

Located in Sibiu County, the small yet magical village of Șeica Mică is known as the residence of the Șeica Mică commune. The distance from one end to the other is short, marked by the 48 km from Sibiu and, on the other hand, the 23 km from Mediaș.

Historical Monuments

Visually, there are a number of historical monuments worth visiting in Șeica Mică. In past centuries, each village had three central fortifications that defined it as a settlement inhabited by a community of people. These were, in random order:

• a school
• a church
• an infirmary

In the best cases, once delineated and identified, the three clearly expressed that the area was a populated village.

Evangelical-Lutheran Church

As for Șeica Mică, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – since the 14th century, this territory has been home to the Evangelical-Lutheran Church, dedicated to *St. Catherine. The main reason for its recognition lies in the bronze baptismal font, shaped like a chalice, which has existed since 1477. And the master was none other than the renowned Leonard from Sibiu*.

Monument to the Romanian Heroes

On the other hand, another monument that Șeica Mică takes pride in is the Monument to the Romanian Heroes of the First and Second World Wars – one of the most profound examples of fortifications created in honor of those who fell in the fight for peace. Its identification is extremely simple, thanks to its height of 2.46 meters and the handcrafted mosaic concrete. Along it, there are:

• 23 names of heroes who died during the First World War
• 13 names related to those who passed away in the Second World War

German Soldiers' Plot

It is important to mention the plot of German soldiers, located in the Evangelical-Lutheran cemetery, where there are still 58 military personnel buried, which any passerby can visit.

Current State of the Village

Even though today the number of locals is in significant decline, a few ruins and walls left over time still persist. As for the village school of Șeica Mică, it still exists – but few attend its classes.

Silence and balance prevail on the village streets, once filled with the noise and chatter of children who would come out, unwavering, at the same hour every day. People come and go, but you must visit Șeica Mică at least once in your lifetime. The Sibiu village, documented since 1311, surely has something special for each of us. And the 1,064 inhabitants are always eager for guests!
