Introduction to Avrig

Situated at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains, the town of Avrig is one of the many localities found in the expansive Sibiu County. Only 26 kilometers separate the county seat from the town in question, creating a strong connection between the two—not only economically, industrially, and touristically, but also culturally. Numerous influences are still present today, firmly enduring as sustainable aspects for the aforementioned.

Geographic and Historical Significance

Thus, the town of Avrig is an integral part of Sibiu County, located at an altitude of over 400 meters. The town is traversed by the Olt Valley and the national road DN1, a significant advantage for those wishing to reach their destination by road.

The locality is extremely well-known globally, especially thanks to the statement made by the French geographer Em. De Martonne, who referred to the peaks of the Făgăraș Mountains as the *"Alps of Transylvania."*

The first official document attesting the locality dates back to 1364, and it received the designation of town much later, on April 25, 1989. Additionally, it includes Bradu, Glâmboaca, Mârșa, and Săcădate, which are essential to explore when you are in the area.

Tourist Attractions

On the other hand, the town of Avrig is home to a multitude of tourist attractions of beauty, significance, and historical tradition. Among these are:

  • The medieval fortification monument at Avrig-Racovița
  • The Evangelical-Lutheran Church (built between 1270 and 1280 and completed in the years leading up to the 16th century)
  • The Orthodox Church (which features murals painted as early as 1762, alongside stunning interior frescoes)
  • The ethnographic museum
  • One of the most imposing memorial houses, that of the renowned Gheorghe Lazăr, and his bust

Mountain Trails

Additionally, the town of Avrig is the perfect base for mountain trails. Starting from Avrig, you can traverse:

  1. Izvorul Florii
  2. Suru
  3. Lake Avrig
  4. Negoiu
  5. Reach Bâlea

From here, you will witness the ineffable beauty of nature found in our country! Another mountain trail begins in Avrig, passing through:

  • Poiana Neamțului
  • Cabana Bârcaciu
  • Reaching Negoiu

However, if you wish to take the same route (Poiana Neamțului, Cabana Bârcaciu) but end up at Suru, remember to include Lake Avrig in your itinerary.

Conclusion

Thus, whichever trail you choose, we assure you that you will enjoy the wonders provided by nature tenfold. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, worthy of appreciation, visitation, and preservation at its true values.
