The city of Săcele

The city of Săcele

Introduction to Săcele

A small locality emerges in the southeast of Brașov County – named Săcele, the municipality represents an important part of the county, just as the county represents it. It is no surprise that this close connection exists, as what separates one region from another is merely a road passage – but the distance is bridged by the 120 buses (public transport options) that connect one side to the other.

Logistical Organization

The number of routes is certainly not to be overlooked, as it highlights the intense industry and mutual dependence between the two already merged areas. Logistically, the city of Săcele is organized into seven old villages, now referred to as neighborhoods:

  • Baciu
  • Turcheș
  • Cernatu
  • Satulung
  • Tarlungerni
  • Purcareni
  • Zizin

Officially, it took on the role of municipality only on June 6, 2000.

Historical Background

However, looking back in time, the first moment of the city of Săcele is marked by Louis I of Anjou, the Hungarian king who granted the emblem on May 16, 1366. Of course, the reason was a small business deal, through which he ceded a varied area of important resources to his friend, Count Stanislav.

Wealth of the Inhabitants

It may be hard to believe, but the first inhabitants of Săcele were extremely wealthy – both spiritually, materially, and culturally. At that time, there was no one who had not heard of the "mocani," the local shepherds who owned thousands of sheep in a highly prosperous area.

Cultural Activities

In modern times, a series of activities typical of Săcele remain, which we wholeheartedly encourage any eager tourist to participate in. We refer here to:

  • Sântilie (a Romanian celebration)
  • Various festivals
  • Traditional folk costumes
  • Typical architecture that is worth noting and admiring

Economic Development

Considering the size of the city, one might assume that the industry and economy are somewhat down. Well, immediately after the implementation of the communist regime, the municipality's industry flourished, with the most representative enterprise known as Electroprecizia Săcele.

Later, with the passage of time and the fall of communism, the industry stagnated relatively, making way for the burgeoning economy. Furniture factories, meat packaging plants, and sawmills are just a few niches upon which the municipality of Săcele relies, in an attempt to reclaim its importance and the continuous pleasure of being a place where any tourist can stop to linger or even stay for a longer period.

Attractions in Săcele

If you think there isn’t much to do in Săcele, consider the 15 churches (Evangelical, Catholic, and Orthodox) before making a decision!
