The Collapsed Church in Velt

Gabriela Corşatea
•May 13, 2016

The Evangelical Church in Velt

Built on Sibiu land, the Evangelical Church in Velt made its appearance in the 15th century, specifically in the 1400s. The fortification, renowned for its characteristic style and truly imposing dimensions, is well-known (or perhaps infamous) due to events that have tarnished its strong character and impressive stature. We are referring here to its stage of collapse, primarily due to the lack of interest from authorities to take the necessary restoration measures. The benefits from such endeavors would have come, in part, very easily and quickly – a larger tourist traffic and a deeper and broader recognition.

Architectural Style

The style of the Church in Velt is late Gothic. With a façade featuring a portal two meters high and a width of over 1.5 meters, the impact on any tourist is certainly in favor of the fortification – for it is rare to encounter such constructions that make you stop and wonder what was in the place where you stand, some time ago.

Historical Measures

Regarding the measures taken, dating back over 600 years, time has indeed left its mark on it. However, throughout the ages, small changes and modifications have made their way – hence, in 1880, restorations ensured that the current vault was solidified and well-structured.

Recent Developments

But a long time has passed since then. From 2002 to the present, the eastern part no longer exists, having collapsed rapidly. The representatives of the authorities have shown no interest in taking the necessary measures, despite the fact that the Evangelical Church in Velt is one of the oldest fortifications of its kind.

Loss of Heritage

A very interesting and, at the same time, sad aspect about this religious construction is the disappearance of the bells and the church organ, which were transported to Cenade in Sighișoara immediately after the collapse. However, when it comes to responsibility, the vast majority of people shift the blame from one to another, namely the local authorities who revoke their right to act, claiming that the church is not under their ownership.

The destruction of such a place of worship is an immense loss. The beautiful Gothic architectural style, the materials used, and the hours that went into building this structure, years ago, all these things are, unfortunately, being erased from our sphere of knowledge. Very little can still be done for the Collapsed Church in Velt, until it disappears forever.
