The Council Tower

Today a historical monument, the story of the Council Tower, or the Town Hall Tower, begins between 1224 and 1241, with the construction of the second ring of fortifications of the citadel. Nearby, the "City Council" would gather, which is how it got its name.

From the original tower, the base has withstood the test of time, up to the first floor. Over the years, it has taken on various appearances, being reconstructed in 1588 after a devastating earthquake, raised from its initial four levels, and modified and restored repeatedly.

Being here since the very foundations of old Hermannstadt, the Council Tower has played an administrative, military, and cultural role, witnessing the ages of the city.

Roles of the Council Tower

It has served as:

  • A gate tower
  • A fire lookout
  • A prison
  • A grain depot
  • A museum
  • A viewpoint

Throughout the years, alongside the ever-watchful eyes on its rooftops, the Council Tower has been a silent witness to history.

It has seen fairs, gatherings, and above it flew the zeppelin during the interwar period, while the nostalgic tram of Sibiu passed nearby. In its shadow, noble guests and fierce conquerors have rested, hurried locals, bohemian tourists, and friendly pigeons.

From the executions...

From Medieval to Modern Times

...to the concerts and the festivals which animate today the two squares, the Council Tower could tell stories of history.

Sibiu: a wise city through multicultural heritage, dynamic and always surprising.

Visiting the Tower

The entrance to the Tower is through a narrow door from the Small Square. The clock, whose intricate mechanism can be admired on the penultimate floor, measures the rhythm of footsteps in the Great Square, while from above, the Tower watches over the city in all four directions, stretching into the distance.
